藻蓝色素是从蓝藻中分离纯化的一个活性蛋白，是蓝藻中卟啉类色素蛋白。具有独特的荧光性质和良好的生物功效。与蛋白质有相同的性质。产品为蓝色颗粒或粉末。溶于水。不溶于醇和油脂。乙醇等有机溶剂会导致藻蓝蛋白不可逆的变性。其水溶液的颜色为鲜艳的蔚蓝色。每个藻蓝蛋白单体由a亚单位和b亚单位组成，其单体(ab)分子量4万d左右，ph6.5-8.0时以三体(ab)，ph4.5-6.0时，以六体(ab)形式存在，分子量23万d左右。不论以单体、三体或六体形式存在，在可见光下均呈现出美丽的蓝宝石颜色，色泽鲜艳，经测定在多种理化因素下都是相当稳定的。
