backgroundinformation
interleukin-3(il-3)is a pleiotropic cytokine that regulates theproliferation,maturation, and survival of progenitor cells ofthe
myeloid,erythroid,and megakaryocyte lineage. il-3 is predominantly producedbyactivated t cells although expression has also been detectedinmonocytes and macrophages, nk-cells, mast cells, endothelialcells,and keratinocytes.
il-3 also may promote dendritic cell formation from cd34progenitorsin the presence of tnf-alpha, induce phagocytosisin
stimulated macrophages, and up-regulate the expression ofil-1,il-6, and tnf-alpha. furthermore, il-3 can induce the
synthesis of histamines in mast cells and the expressionofcomplement factor c3a receptors on basophils. il-3 hasalsobeen
shown to recruit eosinophils and increase platelet andneutrophillevels. il-3 may contribute to th2 responsesbyinducing il-10 and il-13 in mast cells and il-4 and il-3 innon-bnon-t cells. human il-3 is a 133 amino acid protein thatcontainstwo n-linked glycosylationsitesand exists as a monomer.
