sealed lead acid batteries are higher in chargeefficiency,depending on the bulk charge voltage it can be higherthan95%.
minimum voltage 
anything above 2.15 volts per cell will charge a lead acidbattery,this is the voltage of the basic chemistry. however, mostof thetime a higher voltage is used because it forces thechargingreaction at a higher rate. the voltage to avoid is thegassingvoltage, which limits how high the voltage can gobeforeundesirable chemical reactions take place. the typicalchargingvoltage is between 2.15 volts per cell (12.9 volts for a 6cellbattery) and 2.35 volts per cell (14.1 volts for a 6 cellbattery).these voltages are appropriate to apply to a fully chargedbatterywithout overcharging or damage. if the battery is not fullychargedyou can use much higher voltages without damage becausethecharging reaction takes precedence over any over-chargechemicalreactions until the battery is fully charged. this is why abatterycharger can operate at 14.4 to 15 volts during thebulk-chargephase of the charge cycle.

unregulated transformer-based chargers
these are the absolute cheapest chargers around. they consist ofawall mount transformer and a diode. the transformer is designedtodeliver 13 to 14 volts over a reasonable current range. thebiggestproblem with this approach is that when the current tapersoff, thevoltage raises to 15, 16, 17, even 18 volts. at these highvoltageselectrolysis of the water in the battery starts in. thesemust notbe left to trickle or float charge a battery, they mustbedisconnected when the battery is fully charged. this is notaproblem with flooded batteries as long as you check thewaterperiodically and refresh it. sealed lead acid batteries canrecyclethe generated gasses as long as they are being overchargedat lessthan c/3. however, leaving the battery to be overchargedeven atc/10 will corrode the plates if left on for weeks at atime.
the transformer is so designed as to limit the current whilethebattery is in absorption mode. as the battery voltage risesthecurrent decreases to top off the battery. because thetransformeris used to control the current and voltage thesechargers aretypically heavy and get hot.
note to our oem customers: even though we support our oemcustomerswith unregulated transformer chargers to help them staycostcompetitive, many of our new customers come to powerstreambecausesomeone else sold them an unregulated charger withoutexplainingthe trade-offs, and the end-user complaints forced themto look fora better charger. most of the time the complaints comefromcommercial customers rather than consumer customers. we prefertooffer the inexpensive, precise, regulated chargers thatuseswitchmode power conversion.
