我国脚手架的技术水平与国外发达国家的差距很大。以日本为例，日本在20世纪50年代以单管扣件脚手架为主，由于不断发生施工伤亡事故，到20世纪60年代大量推广应用门式脚手架。由于门式脚手架装拆方便，承载性能好，安全可靠，尤其是劳动省对脚手架的安全使用作出了规定，使门式脚手架成为施工企业的主导脚手架，在各类脚手架中，其使用量占50％左右。日本对脚手架的安全性非常重视，根据不同工程要求采用不同用途脚手架和支撑，能为施工工人提供良好的工作环境和保证施工安全，要求脚手架周围有严密的栏杆和网栏，脚手板接头之间不能有缝隙，防止杂物掉下伤人。目前，日本已开发和研究了多种规格的脚手架及附件，脚手架和附件生产厂家也有460多家。如框式脚手架中有门式脚手架，h型脚手架、折叠式脚手架；承插式脚手架中有碗扣式脚手架、圆盘式脚手架、插孔式脚手架、插槽式脚手架等，以及扣件式脚手架。脚手架扣件大部分采用钢板扣件，并且种类很多，应用范围较广。以上各类脚手架中，仍以门式脚手架为主，使用量约占50％左右。据日本建设工业会介绍，在近10年内，日本没有因脚手架质量安全问题产生伤亡事故，这确实很不容易。
