applications
measurementof distance is fundamental to hundreds of industrial, defense, andconsumer needs. of course, the measurement of level isa distance measurement. 
withranges extended up to a mile or more or as short as small fractionsof an inch, they typically find applications in such disparatefields as collision avoidance systems, military target ranging,tanker car load-out, truck positioning, robotics, laser measuringtapes and industrial level control.
combine\'sexpertise and emphasis is level measurement, however, we can and doaddress a wide range of laser applications. 
toaccurately measure distance, the time required for light to make around trip between the measuring device and the object ismeasured.  combine offers two different lasermeasurement methods.

thesimplest, conceptually, is the time-of-flight approach thatmeasures the elapsed time between when a short pulse of lightleaves the instrument and when the returning reflected or scatteredpulse is detected.
phase modulation approach (hand-held)
conceptuallymore complex, but electronically simpler, is to measure the phaseof a modulated light beam when it leaves the instrument, and thencompare that phase to the phase of the returnlight.
principlesof operation
there are three physical properties of laser light that can beexploited in the measurement of distance:
light travels in a straightline.  
this property makes feasible a variety of possible geometricmethods for measuring distance, most of which depend on some formof triangulation. these methods are limited in that they require atleast two spatially separate referencepoints.
laser light is coherent.  
the use of diffraction (destructive and constructive interference)of the light is an excellent method for measuring very shortdistances (inches or less) with sub-micron accuracy. the technique,however, is not easily usable for greaterdistances.
light propagates through space with a very well-knownvelocity.
in principle, this offers an extremely accurateway to determine distances of any required length. it istechnically difficult, though, to accurately time thedeparture/return of a light pulse traveling ~ 1 ft/ns. resolutionof 1/8 in., e.g., requires a temporal accuracy of ~10 ps.
