dispersing prisms are used to seperate a beam of white lightintoits component colors. generally, the light is first collimatedandthen dispersed by the prism. a spectrum is then formed at thefocalplane of a lens or curved mirror. in laser work, dispersingprismsare used to separate two wavelengths following the same beampath.typically, the dispersed beams are permitted to travel farenoughso the beams separate spatially. a prism exhibitsmagnification inthe plane of dispersion if the entrance and exitangles for a beamdiffer. this is useful in anamorphic(one-directional) beamexpansion or compression, and may be used tocorrect or createasymmetric beam profiles.
